Groups We Work With

DGLG is in close contact with a number of statutory bodies:

Derbyshire County Council - www.derbyshire.gov.uk
Derbyshire County Council and DGLG work together on the Traveller Needs working Group. Last year we produced the culture booklet A Better Road. This project had been identified as something to aim for across Europe. To support the work the Finnish Cale sent the guidebook that they have recently produced as a model - Please see Health publications page.

Traveller Education - www.derby.gov.uk
Work undertaken by varying agencies within North Derbyshire Coalfields area. Recently there has been two Networks formed, these are The Blackbridge Gypsy and Travellers Forum and the North East Derbyshire Travellers Forum. These are inter-agency meetings similar to the Travellers Needs Working Group at Derbyshire County Council and involve Agencies such as Sure Start, Early Years and Childcare and Connexions. In 2005 DGLG in conjunction with Early Years and Childcare, joined forces to obtain the new playground for the Corbriggs Caravan site, which won an Award in Excellence.

NHS Health Care
We have had an increasing workload regarding health issues, basically this comes down to many people not having a safe base to be and the stresses around planning problems, apart from this we have provided information to many agencies and have undertaken Palliative (Care of dying) care lectures to Primary Care Trusts. We are members of the Health and Social Services Ethnic Minorities Planning Group that works with key people from the Health Authority and Local Trusts. Many thanks to the Trust for funding to allow the work we do around health to continue. We will be arranging a conference next year especially around elderly Romani Gypsy needs - watch out for the event.

Moving Forward National Police Training Project
We have been awarded the Queens Award for Innovative Police Training in conjunction with Derbyshire Police - Please see the Pride not prejudice website to download report.
www.pridenotprejudice.org.uk

Derbyshire Gypsy Liaison Group in conjunction with Pride not Prejudice is formulating a specialist training package for community members. This course will be accredited with Derby University.

The intention is that we have enough members from the Romany Gypsy and Irish Traveller communities to undertake diversity and cultural awareness training with emphasis on our own communities. The training then can be undertaken for the Police, social services and other agencies.

This project is a local and national project it is funded locally by Derbyshire Community Foundation Sustainable Communities Fund.

CRE (Commission of Racial Equality) Scrutiny
DGLG are involved in the scrutiny and have been consulting on the findings of the draft report. The report is due out the 15th May 2006.
