Derbyshire County Council and DGLG work together on the Traveller Needs working Group. In 2004 we produced the culture booklet A Better Road. This project had been identified as something to aim for across Europe. To support the work the Finnish Cale sent the guidebook that they had recently produced as a model - Please see Health publications page. "An Improved Path to a Better Road" updated a Better Road in 2009.

BME Mental Health Community Scheme.
As part of their on-going commitment to address the equality agenda in mental health, Hardwick Clinical Commissioning Group recently agreed to commission Links CVS to run a mental health community scheme to improve the mental health of Black and Ethnic Minority (BME) people in Derbyshire. The project will connect BME communities with mainstream mental health services in Derbyshire. DGLG is a participating group in the scheme as we run both a drop in and a phone line service. Support sessions are culturally appropriate to our community and we can signpost to the relevant agencies to make sure families and individuals get the help that they need.
Three members undertook the mental health first aid training course and successfully completed the six week course and received a certificate on the 17th September 2013. Muzelley McCready, Bridie Page and Johanna Price. With thanks to Jenny Wizzard who has worked hard to coordinate the training days and support for the scheme. We find it an invaluable experience to work with all the BME groups and there is strength in us working together for training and forums.
We continue to attend the bi monthly forum meetings to undertake consultations for Derbyshire County Council on a number of topics working in conjunction with Mick Evans from Derbyshire County Council and James Lee at Links.

DGLG have had an increasing workload regarding health issues, basically this comes down to many people not having a safe base to be and the stresses around planning problems. At the moment we are working on updated health information on Cancer and offer support through the BME Mental Health phone line support scheme and the volunteering Fund Heath and Social Care funded project for elders and carers. The situation in Eastern Europe is not improving as can be seen in the neo-nazi violent marches happening in Czech and Hungary, a history of segregation and racism, which all lead to increasing the likeliness of new arrivals in the UK. Thus the need for advocacy work to help improve, educate and support life in Derby city. Please click on following link for information about Roma in Derby.
